Community Giving Charitable Organisations Guide to Sustainable Growth

No matter what type of services, outreach program or charitable services you provide, there is a fine balance between servicing people and running a sustainable organisation that must be achieved.

Over the years we have found that many of these community delivery services organisation struggles with inefficiencies in their back office and have trouble with accurate reporting. Often, they are not sure what they should be reporting and make it more complicated that it needs to be.

In addition, there can be downward pressure on funding and upward pressure on costs and hence, it’s difficult to maximise the use of their funding.

To turn this around, you’ll need to identify your gaps and opportunities, and develop a plan to maximise the efficiencies, while still delivering your services.

On the surface this may appear to be a daunting task, however, it need not be over complicated.

When you know exactly how to assess your charitable services and obtain the data you need to develop a plan for sustainable growth, the process becomes even more rewarding.

How to Conduct an Organisational Assessment

First, you’ll need to review all your critical finance and operational areas. This means assessing your key drivers, your systems, your team, your culture, your productivity, your capacity, your cash flow, your risk and your opportunities.
Once completed, you’ll be able to use your key drivers and unit costs to determine your budgeting requirements and cash flow forecasts. Next, is undertaking business scenario modelling, which will help you determine the best decisions to make today, so you can achieve the goals you have set for the future. In the process of change, you may decide to make changes to your back-office processes, implement software to improve efficiency, adjust staff KPI’s and redefine roles of management. Other critical things to consider are, how you can reduce waitlist times, identify new revenue opportunities, and how you can monitor your operations for quality assurance and continuous improvement.

There is quite a bit to be done to grow into a business that can service more people than you do today. So, if you don’t have the capacity in house for this undertaking, you may consider engaging a Not-for-Profit and NDIS Provider business transformation specialist to assist you.
